The Cyberdelic incubator in Melbourne in conjunction with the Australian Psychedelic Society will bring together artists, activists, academics, and scientists to explore a range of Extended Reality Technologies (XR) including VR/AR/MR and Sensory Augmentation experiences.

The event will open with four individual lectures followed by a Panel session and a showcase of Cyberdelics.

We will explore Cyberdelic technologies that allow us to strengthen our capacity for metaprogramming and self-transformation in order to raise the frequency within the individual and the collective consciousness. The Cyberdelic Movement is just one of the many paths of the global renaissance for claiming back a conscious approach to the use of technologies.

The theme of the Melbourne node is ‘The History and Future of Cyberdelics.’

The term “Cyberdelics” emerged from the visionary psychonauts and leading minds of the ’60s. With the launch of the personal computer revolution, Timothy Leary famously said: “The PC is the LSD of the ‘90s” followed by one of the most remembered memes of the 60’s “the medium is the message” which fully embraced McLuhan’s concept of the Global Village as the natural evolution of the new media technology.

Recent work by MIT has pointed the way to the future of Cyberdelics with Programmable Synthetic Hallucinations that describe the utilisation of the bio-physiological mechanics of hallucination generated in the human brain to display virtual information directly in the visual field… By electrically stimulating the cells in the hypercolumns of V1, one can induce the perception of a pixel of light within the visual field of a user. These magnetophosphenes are visual perceptions described as luminous shapes, which can be created by time-varying magnetic fields.

The kind of questions and issues we will explore include:

  • How do we ensure technologies are part of the solution rather than the source of the problem?
  • How can we enable new forms of experience that lead to cognitive and creative insights about the nature of reality?
  • How can technology become a tool to get us back into nature with a renewed sense of purpose?
  • How can we create transformative experiences within these immersive technologies?
  • How can we avoid replacing imagination with computer animation?
  • How can these technologies help us to reprogram our associations and see ourselves from other perspectives (including the non-human)?
  • How can we design and use these technologies to contribute to individual and collective awakening?
  • What is the healing potential of these technologies to expand our experience of ourselves and the reality we live in?

CYBERDELIC EXPERIENCES AVAILABLE AT THE EVENT:

Crystal Vibes:

Experience candy-colored psychedelic sound rippling through an endless crystal universe. Crystal Vibes utilises the cutting edge of spatial 3D audio and sound visualisation that maps sound and light based on the science of the human senses, to push the frontiers of technology-mediated sensory experience in virtual reality. With the project’s predecessor described as “transcendent” and “like traveling through a psychedelic kaleidoscope” (Forbes 2016), this piece ups the ante with music from producer Ott. Exhibited at Sundance Film Festival New Frontier in January 2017, at Kaleidoscope Showcase Vol. 2 in 11 cities across the world, at E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) at the Women In Games International E3 Party hosted by Two Bit Circus, and hand selected as a Vimeo Staff Pick!

Virtual Awakening – Death is Only the Beginning (DIOTB is based on a conceptual representation of a Near Death Experience (NDE):

This is not “edutainment”. It is an experience best completed with a strong personal intention. Preparatory and follow-up work is essential to make the most out of this experience. This 360-degree immersive storytelling allows them to step into the life of someone who is unconsciously caught up in the negative consequences of modern living. This embodied Mindful VR experience facilitates an empathic resonance with this character’s perspective, mindset, and body. The NDE begins at the moment the body says “Enough” and the mind are freed to explore the experience of what dying could be.
Participants explore various stages of an NDE, as detailed in the medical literature by those given a second chance at life. Followed by a life review, raising awareness of critical global, social and relational issues facing all of humanity today, and invited to consider how they might proceed after they come back to their bodies and make the most this precious “second chance”.

Nature Abstraction 2.0

Authors: Matteo Zamagni (artist) Marco martignone (developer) and Daniel Ben Hur (sound designer). Nature Abstraction 2.0 is an immersive sensory experience that explores the arcane forms of fractals. Nature Abstraction is the result of ongoing experimentation and exploration of 3D fractals in real-time, which enables the audience to fully interact and explore freely the 3D fractal environment, accompanied with scores designed to facilitate meditative state and relaxation; The audience is invited to explore ever changing structures, dive into their vast complexities and interact with them though remote controls, giving insight into the seemingly familiar mathematical structures of biological and non biological forms.

Umwelt Hacker

If our sensory inputs were transformed to more closely match those of other species, how long would it take for neuroplasticity to decode such new representations? Can the umwelts of other creatures, brought to us in greater detail than ever before through cutting-edge Mixed Reality, help induce a deeper empathy across Earth’s species and beyond? How far can our perceptıons be altered before the cease toehold a valid representation of reality? For that matter what even is a valid representation of reality? We have constructed a state of the art MR camera rig capable of capturing the natural world in stereoscopic 360 at staggeringly high frame rates and resolutions. You are invited to experience planet Earth from the perspectives of its nonhuman denizens, featuring footage recently captured across the world.

New auditory systems (Hearables):

The NERVANA headphone system electronically signals the Vagus nerve which in turn stimulates the release of neurotransmitters in the brain that revolutionized how we experience sound. The SUBPAC tactile interface is a wearable Tactile Bass System that transfers the physical dimension of sound directly to the body. Whether being used to enhance music or as a vehicle for accessing physical immersion in VR, MR and gaming the SubPac adds a powerful new sensory element to any audio experience.

Sound Self:

Use your voice to navigate through strobing tunnels-of-light, impossible shapes, and deep into a meditative trance. SoundSelf is an elegant symmetry of image, sound and body that takes advantage of loopholes in the way you perceive to facilitate a new experience of yourself and your world.

Spheres:

Fall into a black hole. Surf on Saturn’s rings. Experience SPHERES, an award-winning Virtual Reality journey through the cosmos. In this 45-minute, three-part Virtual Reality series from writer and director Eliza McNitt and executive producers Darren Aronofsky and Ari Handel, you’ll follow Millie Bobby Brown, Jessica Chastain, and Patti Smith as they take you on an adventure through the cosmos. Fully immersive and shown in a custom-designed screening room with Oculus Rift headsets, viewers will be thrown into another world where you’ll see, hear, and feel the cosmos unlike with any other experience.

Mirrors by Barrett Fox and Martin Schubert

An embodied experience showcasing the potential for expressive movement and powerful body presence through hand tracking. Mirrors is a short, body-movement-focused demo which utilises a rigged upper body avatar driven by Leap Motion hands. Standing inside a mirrored cube, you’ll begin the experience with a body composed of a cloud of white particles. Touch the first mirror and you’ll burst into a rainbow of shifting colours where each particle’s velocity determines its hue. Each of the four walls reflects a different particle representation. Try them all on and whether you dance, wave, wiggle or high five your reflection, the more you move the more particles you’ll emit.

Friktal – VR FRACTAL AUDIO TOY

One thing is certain with Friktal. You WILL see things that blow your mind. You will get goosebumps as your music drives fractal math to create worlds too stunning to believe.

VISIONARY ART SHOWCASE

HERA WING

Artist | Australia | Hera Wing

The creations of Hera Wing, multi-method artist based in Melbourne, Australia.

She is a multi media artist based in Melbourne, Australia. Utilising a variety of sensorial stimuli, she distils surreal imagery from the subconscious into archetypal visuals to be fleshed via the viewer’s own personal narratives.

Hera’s deep appreciation of natural forms and biological structures comes from her upbringing off-grid in the forests of northern New Zealand. The isolation sparked in her a fascination for human psychology – the internal world and how it impacts their external worlds.
